UNIX was originally developed at AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was designed from its inception to support multiple simultaneous users and tasks, and was built on the philosophy of combining independent, reusable components. It was originally used with text-based terminals but now offers support for a variety of graphical interfaces.

GNU/Linux is a UNIX-like operating system using applications and utilities started in 1984 by the GNU project and debuting as a bootable system in 1991 using the Linux kernel developed as a project started and lead by Linus Torvalds.

UNIX and GNU/Linux systems are often employed as servers because of their operational stability, relative security, and the ability to run without any graphical user interface if desired. They are becoming increasingly popular as desktop platforms as well.
